About Us

The Bioinformatics Centre at KAU, Thrissur was set up in 1995 as the 23rd Distributed Information Sub Centre (DISC) under the Biotechnology Information System Network (BTIS Net) programme, of the Department of Biotechnology, Government of India. The Centre was upgraded to DIC during 2004 with the objective to support Biotechnology research. The centre has shifted to new premises in September 2006 which also has facilities for wet lab work. The communication facilities at the centre is strengthened by the 3Mbps leased line internet connectivity from AIRTEL. The Centre conducts training programmes in Bioinformatics for scientists working in the University and procures databases in the field of Agriculture and related domains. A (2+2) credit course in Bioinformatics is offered to the Postgraduate students of Centre for Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology.

To act as a node of Biotechnology Information System and to function as an information base for the specialized areas of the host institute with computer based information resources, databases etc.

Objectives

• To provide access to scientific information in biotechnology
• To organize suitable training programmes for the scientists and technical personnel especially in Bioinformatics
• To develop databases pertaining to specialized areas of research in the host institute especially in Biotechnology
• To promote research in Bioinformatics and popularize its importance as the new millennium promises to be the era of Biotechnology with an impact on all the important areas of Agriculture and Bioinformatics can offer successful exchange of knowledge, information technology packages and references to the students and scientists of the University
